School is in session

After more than 2 weeks of orientation, planning, meetings, etc, the students finally arrived on Tuesday, Sept. 3rd!! This marks the 55th year that the American School of Kuwait has welcomed students. My role this year is Middle School tech coach and I teach 2 sections of Computer Programming to 7th and 8th graders. One fascinating thing about this region is trying to read and pronounce the students names... that and lining up by alphabetical order in elementary school must be very challenging!

Brigitte is teaching High School French. She has 2 sections of French 1 and 2, and one section of French 3 and AP. She has relatively small class sizes and overall has found the students quite enjoyable...it is, of course, the honeymoon period ;)

Now that school is open, we have been settling into the rhythm of schedules, buses, etc. There are 3 buses in the morning(6:00, 6:30, and 6:45) and 3 in the afternoon (3:45, 4:45, and 5:15). It is roughly a 30-minute drive between home and school. School does not being until 8:30 and runs until 3 for both of us as middle school and high school share the same schedule, which is nice. Once we receive our Civil ID, we will be able to apply for a driver's license, although, at this point, we are not sure we want to drive here(again, a post about driving is coming soon). Generally, if you ignore the 118-degree temperature, the school looks and feels very American. The students have to wear a "uniform" which is a school polo shirt and blue pants. The high school is navy blue polo, middle school is grey and elementary school is light blue, which makes it easy to tell them apart.

Each of us have lunch duty for one week out of the month. Brigitte got quite unlucky with her post. Her duty is to roam the parking lot and area towards the auditorium, none of which is in the shade. For 25 minutes, she had to walk around and patrol and, no joke, in the sun, it was approaching 120f. It was a long 3 days, but at least the next time she has duty, it should be down, you know, in the upper 90's ;)
Gym time, in the shade, but even then it is still well above 100 degrees.

First 5 day week approaches, remember, we have a Sunday to Thursday workweek here. I will also have to decide if I want to get up at 2:30am Monday to watch the Pats game live....me thinks not.
